AVID stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination and is a regularly scheduled elective class that prepares students in the middle, with academic potential, for success in advanced high school classes and in college.
 
-- Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, and Reading (WICR)are the key componemts of the elective.
-- AVID uses trained tutors to conduct study seminars with the goal of developing independent learners.
-- AVID creates a college-going culture.
 
What happens in the AVID program?
 
The AVID Elective program is three-pronged:

1. Students receive academic instruction in writing, note taking, studying, test taking, and organizing.

2. Students receive academic support from college tutors through collaborative tutorial groups and peer counseling.

3. Students are motovated to pursue academic excellence through goal setting, rigorous classes, cultural and college field trips, classroom guest speakers, and AVID team building.

To become an AVID student:

1. Attend the informational meeting.

2. Complete the student application by the due date.

3. Obtain a counselor recommendation.

4. Obtain two recommendations from core teachers.

5. Complete the application essay prompt.

6. Interview with an AVID team member.

AVID student expectations
1. Maintain at least a "C" average.

2. Show great citizenship and attendance.

3. Maintain an organized binder.

4. Take notes every day, in every class, every year.

5. Participate in weekly tutorials.

6. Write, Question, Collaborate, Read.

7. Take Honors and AP classes.

8. Take PSAT, SAT, ACT tests.

9. Remain in program.

10. Be a well-rounded student.

11. Apply to several four-year colleges.

Parents are expected to encourage their students to achieve academically, to maintain regular contact with the building AVID team member, and to become involved in the activities of the AVID program.
